In 2009 Monterey Jazz released an album of the Monterey Jazz Festival '65 at which Dizzy Gillespie featured Big Black. Black after the Intro then did a ten minute solo that brought the house down as all of his solos do. Black, an American Congo player's greatest single contribution to American music was the making of the hand drum, the most basic of all instruments, an accepted participant in the American Jazz Idiom - Black was the innovator who was able to make the Congo drum a full participant in the Be Bop dialogue - indeed Black played with Dizzy for more than twenty years - from Monterey in "65 onto Havana for the filming of the concert with Arturo Sandoval and innumerable gigs beyond.
